Dear Parent(s) or Guardian(s),
Our class has registered for the 2019‐2020
Take Me Outside for Learning School Year Challenge!
Through this challenge our class will join
hundreds of other classes from around our learning region and across Canada to
take their learning outdoors on a regular (weekly) basis. Not only will this
help to support students’ understanding of their local environment, this will
also help to increase the amount of physical activity that our students will
benefit from. Research indicates that learning outdoors helps to improve
students’ academic success as well as social and emotional well‐being.
The physical benefits of outdoor learning are
the ones cited most often, but it can also positively affect our mood and
mental well‐being. Outdoor learning helps break up the day that is often spent
on sedentary activities, thereby helping achieve guidelines for physical
activity encouraged by the Canadian Pediatric Society and ParticipACTION. There
is also agreement among researchers that spending time in nature and being
active outdoors is beneficial to children’s mental health, and helps improve
their resiliency, academic performance and social skills.
Please make sure your child is dressed
appropriately for taking their learning outside on a weekly basis through the
school year. For more information on this challenge, and the benefits of
outdoor learning, please visit:
